LaVar Ball, the outspoken father of former UCLA guard Lonzo Ball, gave two reasons Thursday for why the Bruins were eliminated in the NCAA tournament: Lonzo was saddled by a hamstring injury, and some of his teammates, whom LaVar referred to as “three white guys,” couldn’t pick up the slack.
Lonzo Ball did not mention the injury after the Bruins’ Sweet 16 loss to Kentucky, and UCLA coach Steve Alford said he believed his player was fine.
“Realistically you can’t win no championship with three white guys because the foot speed is too slow,” LaVar Ball told the Southern California News Group, presumably talking about Bruins starters TJ Leaf, Bryce Alford and Thomas Welsh.
“I told Lonzo, ‘One of these games you might need to go for 30 or 40 points.’ It turned out that was the one game,” LaVar Ball added. “Then once they get to the Elite Eight, they’re right there.”
Lonzo Ball is a likely lottery pick in this summer’s NBA draft, with ESPN’s Chad Ford projecting him to go No. 2 overall in his latest mock draft. Ball has filed paperwork for the draft and has hired an agent after playing one season at UCLA.
He is a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award, which will be handed out Friday night in Los Angeles during ESPN’s College Basketball Awards show (ESPN2).
LaVar Ball’s middle son, LiAngelo, is set to play at UCLA next season. His youngest son, LaMelo, is committed to UCLA in the class of 2019.
Kentucky defeated UCLA 85-76 to advance to the South Region final, where it lost to eventual champion North Carolina.
Once again we have LaVar Ball making headlines, which should be no suprise to anyone at this point. He’s basically the black, basketball dad version of Donald Trump, in a sense that he says whatever he wants and everyone eats it up. This time LaVar has angered white people across the United States. “Realistically you can’t win no championship with three white guys because the foot speed is too slow.” Ohhh I can feel the outrage from 45 year old white dads through my computer right now. “White boys can’t play as well as them black boys?! Not true!”
The college game is a little different because it’s a lot slower than the NBA. Duke’s 2010 had a lot of white guys and Butlers championship run featured a few white players but overall LaVar’s not wrong. He actually hit the nail right on the head with this take. In a sport like basketball where athletic ability is key, white people stink. That’s why the NBA is has like 40 white players. We can’t keep up. We aren’t athletic. Sure if you need some grit or someone who’s sneaky athletic, we’re the guys to call. A white player will give you everything they have on the defensive end while hitting the open corner 3 on the offensive end. Also we are very good at free throw shooting. But if you need someone who’s actually athletic and good at basketball, you call up a black guy.
Sure there’s Kevin Love and Gordon Hayward in todays game. Jason Williams and Jason Kidd before them in the early 2000s. And John Stockton, Kevin McHale and Larry Bird before them. But that right there is what we call outliers. Those guys are over achieving in the NBA. Black players are much more athletic and much better players than white players. I thought this was something everyone knew by now.
I was getting a little worried about LaVar though. Before saying teams can’t win championships with white players, he was quiet. There was about 3 whole days without his name in the news for the first time in forever now. I thought maybe he died or something. Glad to see he’s doing alright.
